Isn't about time we let certain animal species to disappear naturally? I think it's dumb to have a small fish that no one ever knew about stop the construction of a dam that will help mankind. How about that woodpecker that no one is even sure existed any longer but stopped some major project from going thru?

Yes, IF they were becoming extinct NATURALLY we could just let them. All animals become extinct eventually...it is the natural order of things. HOWEVER, humans are speeding up the process at an alarming rate...we are interfering with mother nature. Animals are no longer disappearing at their normal rate...and we have NO clue what harmful affects that could be having on other species around the world INCLUDING humans!!
There are many indicator species that scientist use to determine whether or not the earth is sick...such as frogs. If we kill off all our idicators species...how will we know what changes to make so the planet will be safe for humans!? Have you thought about any of that? Pick up a basic biology or ecology book and read about what a food chain is and how ALL animals are connected.

Every single species that have existed and are existing has his own ecological niche. It may be hard to fathom for some what their niches are, but still their roles are very crucial in the stability of our environment. Diverse species have evolved in response to the ever-changing environment. If there is any change in the environment that is not counteracted upon because of the disappearance of a species capable of counteracting it, then the environment will definitely change and it would be for the detriment of all because the imbalance present in the environment. Humans spend billions just to preserve the balance of nature because any imbalance would result to a disaster more costly than by preventing it. That is just how it work, it is less costly to prevent a disaster than to cure it. More importantly, it is not always assured that if ever a disaster comes because of the imbalance in nature due to the disappearance of certain species, humans can always find a cure to it. Because we will never know if that disaster will cause the annihilation of the human species. That is why we have to spend money, just to save our asses out of it.

Because the next species to go may be us.

Pretty poor planning not to investigate all aspects that will impact such a project. Don't blame the animals. I'd blame the company proposing the project. Better project managers is what this country needs. Trust me.
