It depends. What matters is quality and relevence, not quantity. If it's a good answer, it's a good answer, regardless of length. I wouldn't assume that a long answer is better, but I wouldn't automatically assume that it's a pathetic attempt to give the best answer, either. Sometimes an answer needs to be a little long, to do the job. But if a person is rambling on and on, and going way off-topic, yeah, they're being an idiot.

No actually. I think that when people give long answers, they really are trying to help the asker. I also think that usually the longer answers go into more detail, so they deserve to be picked as a best answer. So you can just shut the heck up and leave people who actually care about helping the society alone.

No I don't but I really dislike people who believe they know what another person is thinking when they are giving an answer.

Why do you assume someone gives a lengthy answer to get points? Perhaps they believe what they are doing is the best possible.

I'd say that makes you a judgemental person for thinking everyone else thinks just like you. They don't.

P.S.
Sorry for taking so much space when I could have just said "yes" or "no" but you know how exciting is can be to get a best answer. Duh?

I give long answers...and it certainly isn't because I want to be voted best. It's because I have information that is useful to the asker. The ones with the short answers...yes...no....OK...etc...etc....aren't contributing anything. They should be providing an explanation or they shouldn't be on here at all...and half those people are just being stupid or nasty.

Thanx for cluing me in . . .

Didn't know that this is the reason for those l - o - n - g answers!!!

Never occurred to me that people are doing this. . .really???

Congratulations for being the smart person who figured this out. Believe me - I'll never, never, ever write a long answer - ever. . . again.

And this is the absolute truth. . .

Sorry that this answer is sosososososos short, but, I've just about run out of things to write, re: long answers, and how some folks just absolutely hate others who compose very long answers, just to win votes for best answer . . .

And it's just totally amazing that you have been able to figure out this reality, and present it - in all it's raw truth here, at Yahoo Answers . . . for me, and the rest of the whole universe to now be thoroughly informed on this horrible, annoying practice. . .

There ought to be some kind of a law against this happening, don't you think? How dare these long-winded writers come to this forum, thinking that they can purge themselves on the unsuspecting public - those poor, opinionated individuals who are just trying to participate in acquiring some excellent information and knowledge - from others who are totally benevolent in baring themselves, thru sharing their own personal experiences, for the altruistic goal of assisting those less fortunate, or wise, than themselves. . .

Excuse me please, while I rest my weary digits . . . be back later, to make this entry shorter . . .

thank you for your time and attentions -

Now - would you please give me 'best answer' for my brevity?

This is so annoying...I mean I never read all the loooong answers people give me and I never give lengthy answers myself because I know this is something disturbing and the other people won't like it and it will take up much of my time. I could do other interesting stuff instead of writing long answers that really are so NOT helpful for the asker....blah blah blah blah blah blah blah..

Some people have lots of information (I do, sometimes), and sometimes people are just long-winded. Far more annoying is the person who returns what the questioner wants to hear instead of an honest answer.

Personally I don't care for real long questions or answers and the long answers don't always get picked as best answers. I know I choose the best for quality not quantity.

Yes! Especially when the question is something like "Who sings this song?" and they put the lyrics to the whole song and you have to scroll down for like 12 minutes just to see the next answer. It's super annoying.
