383s run best at 38-41 degrees total advance btdc. The same would apply on gas even with a 4 1/4 stroke. If your harmonic balancer has slipped and you can't trust your 0 degree mark make a new one. Use a deep reach plug or equivalent and carefully rotate the crankshaft by hand (gently) till the piston stops, mark the dampener at 0 degrees. Rotate the engine the opposite direction again until it stops and mark the damper @ 0 degrees. Exactly 1/2 way between these marks on the dampener is Top dead center, Mark it permanently (scribe it). Then time as appropriate.

Basically the same as a 350 or 400. The cam timing is the same (marks line up) if ignition timing ;do you have a new balancer? was it checked to be in time with the cam timing (different models have different timing tab locations) often times an old balancer rotates on the hub and can be off several degrees and should be checked
Are you running 350 balancer and internal balanced crank or external balanced crank? The 350 and 400 balancers are different and not interchangeable although they will mount up.
I would suggest ign. timing be set at approx.8-10btdc @ idle and 34-35 @23-2500 rpm with centrifugal and vacuum advance no more than 35.(some fine tuning for individual setup)

just treat the 383 like u would a 350 or 400 which ever timing gets u more horsepower if u hear pinging from ur engine advance the timing until it is gone or run 89 or higher gas in ur car

if its got any kind of cam in it other than stock,,you Will have to time it by ear,,run it up till it misfires,,then bring it back down,,just a little until you hear the miss go away,,then go down a little more ,,tighten the distributor down ,,and see how it accelerates if it sounds fine drive it,,you may have to time it again,,to get it right,,i hope this help,s.,,PS don't try to use a timing light on it,,it wont work,,and pay no attention to all the dumb *** answer,s you get on here there just kids at play.

Like everyone says, treat it like standard small block chevy 350. Only difference is that it is bored and stroked. Turn distributor until slight knock then turn back the other way slightly.
