I really want to get into the alternate energy field. It seems like it would be very interesting, and the world needs it. I'm not sure where to start.

If you want to make an applicable difference major in Environmental Engineering. If you want to spend your life in a lab doing research, then aim for chemistry, physics, nuclear engineering. If your aiming for the lab plan on spending many years doing post-grad work.

Nuclear Engineering

All other 'alternative' energy is just feel-good stuff and not widely applicable.

Chemistry, psychics and biology learn the basics first environmental science.

Electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, physics. All would be good.
