I like you very much is more honest and to the point. I love you can mean many things. Like I love you...like a friend. I love you...like a sister/brother. When we say I like you very much it means just that. It means we're not the kind to just throw love around. Unless you truly feel it deep down, saying I love you is just words, whereas I like you very much gets the point across accurately and truthfully.

On the scale, 'like you very much' is about a 3. With true love being 1, of course. It would say he does not quite feel the 'love' for you yet. This is normal, guy take a long, slow time to fall in love.
And he would say that to be honest. After all, if he was to simply say 'love you' it would be a lie and simply what you wanted to hear.(an easy way out, for sure, but some guys are better then that)

Depending on how long you've been seeing each other ..It may mean the same thing. Most women yearn for a commitment of some sort and since men tend to hesitate..very much may seem like a proposal..! Make sure your partner knows what you mean! Be careful... timing as they say is everything!!

Is there a difference between black and white. They don't mean the same thing at all. A guy will say like because he doesn't feel the love and can't get himself to say it.

Perhaps they are insecure about the big "L" word. Maybe they feel that by saying it, they are entering a new stage of the relationship. After all, many DO consider it a special moment when one confesses their love.
By simply saying "I like you very much", they're playing it safe.
Just my 2 cents.

I think its because they aren't sure and they don't want to end up hurting you. That's my opinion on this because you can extremely like someone and go out with them and not love them. Love is a very complicated thing and they could be saying it not to hurt you or because you say you love them and they are confused. But love is very complicated...

For me personally, I would take the words at face value. I've done it and I truly felt that way. OR, I've said it and was scared to let the woman I was dating know that I had fallen in love for fear of her reaction.

Love is nowhere near "like."
Love is in a whole world of its own.
