means a 1 bedroom split level w/kitchen and living area versus a loft or efficiency which is one room with the kitchen or kitchenette all in the same room

A split means split level. That is a house that has a main floor, usually with a living, dining room and kitchen on it. Then it has a small set of stairs, maybe 5 or 6 going to the bedrooms. Sometimes there is also another small set of stairs leading down to basement or family room. I love split level homes and have lived in one. They are the best of both worlds. Privacy in the bedrooms but not a ton of stairs to kill yourself on. Happy hunting.
