There are different reasons for swelling. One reason is trauma, such as being struck. The blow inflicted causes the capillaries (tiny little connections between tiny arteries that carry blood to the tissues and veins that carry blood and waste products back to the heart). Applying cold to the injured part causes these capillaries to shrink and slows down the amount of blood getting to the spot. This keeps swelling down because the swelling is caused by the pooling of blood from the injured capillaries.

Ice keeps swelling down by what is known as vaso constriction. easier terms it reduces the flow of blood to the area that is in trauma. There is a term in first aid called R I C E

Rest Ice
Constrict Elivate. This is done to reduce to flow of blood to the affected area esp if it is an open wound.
Ice is also used if there is pain due to swelling.
Visualize what it is like to have your fingers swollen due to hot weather and you cannot get your ring off, simply emersing your hand in an ice bath will do the trick.

Application of a cold pack causes vasco constriction. That is, it causes the veins to contract, getting smaller in diameter. This pushes blood and fluid away from the area, or hopefully keeps it from pooling in the area.

cold shrinks the blood veins, so there is less blood there.
