The truth. Unless your boss is a complete jerk then he or she will likely understand. Typically, you should not really have to give a reason. Just apologize for your tardiness, express the effort you intend to put forth to make sure it doesn't happen again, and tell him or her you will work late to make up the time. Don't offer more information than is necessary; you're excuse may be interpreted as a personal problem that could be a barrier to your continued employment.

over slept and Flat tire gets old fast. Take it from the pro.
I use situations beyond my control. If there was a storm the night before well what do you know it knocked out my electric so my alarm clock stopped working. After a few of them you might here get a wind up clock. I listen to the radio on the way to work. I listen for accidents and other road tie ups. Of course I know how to avoid them and get to work faster but once at work Gee there was a major tie up at Hwy 39 and it took me 1 hour just to get to the next exit for example.

Sorry I'm late for work. I'll stay a little afterwards to make it up.
That usually does the trick.
