I can be sitting there staring at the screen and not doing anything but all of a sudden my firewall gives me an alert that says "outgoing access denied" along with some other stuff like port and source. What does it all mean? Am I being hacked or something?

Sounds like a trojan "phoning home" to deliver you advertising. I would do a free online scan with Ewido. It is excellent for detection and removal of trojans:

this means that some program on your computer is trying to send information out and onto the internet. THis may be a virus or a totally legitimate program that you have running in the background on your computer. My advise would be to shut down all the programs you dont need and see if the messages continue. if not, do a virus scan

Something in your computer is trying to send out, and the firewall is stopping it. Do you share music? Run any distributed applications?

Or you may just have a virus that is trying to send your credit card numbers somewhere. I recommend you do a thorough virus scan.

The other posters here are correct. It may be completely innocent or it may be a virus or spyware. If you post the complete details, we can tell you what it is and if it's anything that you need to worry about.
