Humid air has a higher viscosity in the airways vs (dryer) air, therefore the respiratory muscles need to work harder to move a specific volume of air. They require more energy (use more oxygen to generate that energy) and need to move more air to meet metabolic needs.

Persons effected with Asthma or COPD find it even more difficult to compensate physiologically.

High humidity hinders the air exchange in the lungs. It feels like you are drowning or being sufficated. Prolong exposure to high humidity levels can increase your chance of developeing phneumonia.
