hahaha.
many people think of it as different things.
some people use it as a way people dress
-tight jeans on guys with tight band shirts is an example.
some people use it as a way to describe hairstyles:
- guys : in their face long, and black
- girls : shorter, maybe spikey
- usually black hair, and sometimes multi-colored, like black on top and blond on the bottom [ but also people call the multi-layering colored hair to be 'fashioncore' ]
some people use emo as a way to describe people:
- always depressed
- cutters
some people use it to describe bands :
- dashboard confessional
- jimmy eat world
- death cab for cutie
those are just examples though, it means different things to everyone. usually its just short for 'emotional'.

More of a post-modern punk rock genre of music. However, the term has been thrown around by many, many various bands and its influences to sorta distort its true meaning.
These days, emo is more of a "nature" than it is a form of music grouping. Bands that are known to act "darker" or attract a more "sk8er" crowd can be said to be "emo".
As far as the music goes, there are different variations of how one plays in an "emo" band, for instance, some bands have high-pitched guitars/vocals and fast paced drums, but others have dullpitched vocals and use a different assortment of instruments.
In my personal opinion, "emo" and "indie" are just poor excuses to catergorize failure of a true rock-n-roll band.

I'm sure you already looked it up but it's pretty much crappy angst ridden teenage punk pop. Emo = emotional and is short for emocore = emotional hardcore punk. Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional and crap like that.

It's a fashion/lifestyle trend. "Emo" is short for "Emotional". Basically it's a spin off of punk/goth. Most "Emos" wear black, die their hair black, try very hard to be "random" and are all about being depressed, moody, self-loathing, etc.
