What is the best way to make home DVD's from my DV camcorder?

I was wondering what would be the best way to capture, edit, and convert my videos that I capture from my Sony DV camcorder. The .avi files are extremely large and I need to somehow reduce the size so that I do not lose too much quality and also convert them so they can be played on my home DVD player.

Have you tried Movie Maker?

For size reduction, convert the mivie to MPEG (.mpg).
The converter will usually allow you to choose from a range of quality/compression settings (usually a 1 to 10 slider, 1 being best quality, and 10 being highest compression).
You can do your editing in something like Adobe Premiere.
I suggest leaving the file in it's native AVI until you are finished editing, and then convert the final AVI to mpeg.
Once all that is complete, use a program like nerovision 3 or nerovision 4 to convert the file to DVD and burn it..
