depends on how much heat rises strait up over the fire place.

first you must find out how hot it gets over your fire place. to do this go to depot lowes or look online for a laser thermometer, you can find one for $20-$30. get a good hot fire going in the fire place then use the thermometer and check the temp at different heights over the fire place. after you have the temps head down to your tv retailer and look for your tv. the manufactures list the max temp that the units should be subjected to.

i cant remember how hot mine gets, but i had to place the tv 2' over the mantle, any lower and it would get to hot.

It depends if its an active fireplace or not 12-18in if active if not active up to you.If you can't figure it out send it to me I have no fireplace but a nice wall that would be a nice place for it
