the car probably back fired up through the carb,,or the float is sticking really bad on it,,this will cause it,,and it is also very dangerous to drive when it,s doing that,,try and get the float working good ,,and also check the timing,,make sure it is right,,before you drive it much,,they will catch on fire,,and have had it happen to me a few times,,once you get the float adjusted right,,and the timing checked,,it should be OK,,also make sure there are not any crossed plug wire,s,,hope this help,s.

hmmm sounds like there is a hot wire passing by ur carb that maybe shorting out on the carb if the insulation is cracked around the wire or it has been pinched in btwn sharp metal parts by the carb..... ur carb contains gas and spark = fire... so check that out that maybe ur cause

Because there is gas in it. That is where the fuel is mixed with air before moving to the intake manifold. It is only natural for a fire to start there if it got a spark.

That would be backfireing out of the carb with flames coming up the carb.. hope that helps.
