i wasnt able to catch most of it so ive been watching clips...and i saw that ricardo (portugal's goalkeeper) took the last penalty shot in the match against england.
was there a reason he did since hes a goalie...rather than having someone else on the team take the kick??
just curious!!! i really wish i would have been able to watch that match!!!

I am stating this fully knowing what I'm talking about, since I live in Portugal.
If you saw clips, you should have seen "Eusébio", an older black guy, near the bench. That's consider the best portuguese player ever, and he gave some advice to Ricardo. Now, that goalkeeper is not only good at defending penalty kicks (as you may have seen in the Euro Cup and in the World Cup) but he had also said on TV that he would love to score a penalty kick, if the chance was possible.
Following the advice of Eusébio, he took out his gloves in the last penalty kick, saved the shot and then tried (obviously suceeding, as you may have seen) in scoring the goal himself. It was just because he wanted to do it, and Eusébio suggested him to.
Now, you may be wondering why he didn't do the same thing on the World Cup. Well, Cristiano Ronaldo's father died a very few time ago, and he asked to score the last penalty kick. If you noticed that he looked to the sky and pointed there, he was devoting that winning goal to his dead father.

I watched it in the Philippines - I knew we would loose the second Postiga came on to the pitch - he had been lousy all season at my team Spurs, and had something to prove to the English players - I knew he would score, and he did - then Sol Campbell had a goal ruled out and it went to penalties - everyone knows we suck at penalties, so I was a bit drunk by that stage. To be honest, I cannot remember Ricardo taking the final penalty, but guess he is becoming a thorn in our sides - I bet he just loves to play against us. Oh well there is always 2008 for me to get disappointed over!

i watched that penalty shoot-out between PORTUGAL & ENGLAND in the 2004 European Championship quarter-finals, both teams finished 2-2 after extra time.
Portugal's goalkeeper Alexandre Ricardo Pereira had earlier saved a penalty from Darius Vassell. so i guess he must be very confident that he can scored the next penalty which indeed he scored & send PORTUGAL to the European Championship semi-finals.

just because they are goalies doesn't mean they can't shoot.
Brazil's back up goalie after Dida has 60 goals because when he started he took their penalty kicks.
Ricardo might be a good penalty kick taker, you never know.
