Employers ask this question for the same reason they ask for past jobs, military experience is considered a job, by nature and your performancein the military is considered the same as your performance in any other job. Most often it is a good thing to have military experience, as it shows disipline and the ability to follow orders.

You can bet that a question about whether or not you were honorably discharged will be in the interview. Also, how your military experience/background can be applied/relates to the position you are seeking.
Also, depending on the job you are applying for, i.e., a government job vs. a private company, preference is given to people with a military background.
Even if being a tanker crewman doesn't apply to any civilian job, you've got to find a way to make it relate. I don't know what a tanker does, but if asked, you can tell the interviewer about team work, leadership in your job if you had any. Also, give credit where credit is due, i.e., if another crew member helped you do a good job on an assignment. Talk about how quickly and how well you learned to do your job, etc. Find ways/things about being a tanker that can be applied to any job. You can apply your military experience to civilian work; just sit down and think about it for a while.
And, yeah, thanks a bunch for serving!!!

You my have learned something in the service they can use. Also if you are in the guard or reserve you can be called up. I got my first job after the army with the phone company because I was a telephone linemen in the army. I also was trained as a truck driver so I took no test for my heavy truck license. All I did was show my military licence & got a state one.

The same as with any job, work habits, how will your previous job or experince help in this position.
If you were a truck mechanic, and you are applying for a truck mechanic, they may ask about certain tools, types of transmissions and so on.
If you were a cook, they may ask about types of equipement you used, the number of meals you fixed.
And so on, the questions will depend on what you did in the military, and what type of job you are going for in civilian life

Employers will ask what your job was and how it will translate into civilian work. Emphasis your ability to make accurate decisions under pressure and the ability to lead is always a plus. Thank you for serving.
