I have a very logical mind and rather than let my emotions rule my actions, I try my very best to think things through. Sometimes I'm successful, sometimes I'm not. However, I get this feeling that when I try to control myself, I'm being less of a human because I'm denying my own feelings in favor of control.

What is the correct thing to do?

Great question!

Rationalizing everything is the very thing that MAKES us human! A lot of research today is clearly suggesting that human beings make decisions almost completely on emotional (or at least non-rational) grounds. For instance, in recent studies, FMRI scans of the brain of a person making a decision show invariably that the decision is arrived at before the pieces of the brain that give us intelligence are engaged. In other words, the decision is made with the parts of the brain we share, anatomically, with chimpanzees.

So what do the intelligent parts do? They simply rationalize the decision that our brain has already made in terms that are consistent with our beliefs, personality, and sense of ourselves.

The mind is a very powerful thing, it controls about 90% of the population, I don't mean to sound like a girly girl, but maybe following your heart won't hurt sometimes.

If rationalising wasn't a "human" thing to do, you, as a human, wouldn't do it. If rationalising helps you answer your questions, keep doing it, everyone works differently. More importantly, the fact that you're questioning how you think means you're on the road to finding out more about yourself and the world. Questioning and revising your methods is making you a wiser, better person.

1. If we weren't able to rationalize, we wouldn't be human.

2. You should learn when it is okay to be controlled by your mind and when to be controlled by your heart. Don't allow your impulses get you into trouble. Don't allow your mind to keep you from experiencing life.
