You know how sometimes on American Idol these people claim that they can sing well, but they sing horribly? I was wondering if they truly believed that they could sing, or was this bribed from the producers. Is there science behind this? I thought they claimed they could sing because they don't hear themselves sing. I am thinking they hear only the singer of that particular song in their mind, and they interpret the singer as them, which is making them believe they can sing. Also, I thought that if the was music too loud that it would drone out thier voices, making them only hear the singer. What do you think? Was this a way to make more money for American Idol, or where they completely clueless on if they could sing or not?

I think its a mix of multiple different things. I think there is a definate possibility that producers convince people to come audition that are just horrible singers. I think that in some cases people do it on a dare from maybe friends or family. Its also a way for people to get their 15 minutes of fame- even if its bad publicity. And lastly some people definately just think they are good singers because they sit in their cars with the music cranked listening to their favorite singer and they hear more of the singer than themselves thus convincing them they are a good singer- but when they get on american idol they need to sing acapella and they are terrible.

ever since the show started i have been discussing this with my friends and family. We have noticed that there are some people that clearly just go on there for the attention. There was on guy last season who went on with this red sheet and said that it was a magic carpet...and they way he was acting, you could tell that he just wanted to be on tv. But i guess some of the people really think they can sing. Because their parents (you know how parents are, they think their baby is the best at everything) tell them that they are great. With others it is just that no one has the guts to tell them that they suck. Idk, but there are some very horrible singers in this world!

o, and the fact that MILLIONS of people try out for american idol. They pick out the few HORRIBLE people to put them on the show. You are only seeing a small fraction of the people that tried out. The majority of the people that try out for american idol ARE good singers, they just don't show those particular people on tv.

Maybe a little bit of both. I think some people truly believe that they can do whatever they put their mind to. Others might do it just to make it on TV. That's what my brother wanted to do-audition and sing horribly. And that's what people want today too in reality TV is the drama. People being told they suck, they cry, and what not. It is what gets people to watch. That's the only reason I watch the auditions...to see the horrible singers.

They think they can sing. They can't hear their own ugly voice and can't say in tune because they don't have good enough hearing. Some of them want the 15 minutes of fame or to just say to their kids and grandkids (years later) that they were on tv. To some people that's all that's matters. Fame, money, and power, which, is not the most important thing.

I wondered how badly I sang so one day I put on my headphones and recorded only my voice. It was pretty bad lol I think you sound better when you're singing along to a song...so you give yourself false hope.

I think they are also encouraged. Because not everyone just gets to go up to simon and them...they have to be screened first. It's sad that the producers let the really bad people go through so simon can rip on them.

I hate American Idol..GAH!! Many of the people try out for it can't sing, and you can only narrow it down to so many 'GOOD' singers, so some of them might suck (most of them) but they probably made it because pof something other than singing...or a last resort...

The auditions were funny for like 2 seasons. Now, they're boring, but either people are truly stupid ot they're doing it just to get on TV....the worse you are, the better the chance. I only watch now when they get to the final 12 and where the public can start voting.

For many, just having made the auditions are enough. They can point to their friends, and say, that at least they had the balls to audition.

For others, primarily those that participate in Karaoke, they actually think they have talent. They point to the fact that they get applause when they do karaoke, not realizing that karaoke, is simply an excuse for being drunk.

You know alot of things are fabricated for tv, I know they can hear. Almost everyone I know, can tell when they sound bad, even me when I cracked on a song in church today (I had overexerted in a previous song and threw my vocals cords out!lol!! :) Some people don't hear very well i suppose.
