Go to an all inclusive destination. Less to worry about. I recommend Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Near Cancun and Cozumel. We stayed at an Iberostar resort. Very nice. Great food. Plenty of cheap shopping near by (quick cab ride). And tons of excursions. When you stay at an Iberostar resort, you can spend the day at one of their other resorts.

Go somewhere that you can afford. Don't go into debt if you can help it. An all inclusive place is nice. So are cruises, tropical islands, etc. But can you afford those without spending too much or going seriously into debt?
Try something more low-key, but just as memorable. If you guys have any sports type hobbies like hiking, camping might be a nice way to go. Go to a place near the mountains.
Or go somewhere you both would enjoy, but isn't like a tropical getaway. Those are so typical, and thus, expensive.
My friends did a 10 day trip that included 6 days in Washington DC, and 4 days in NYC. They ended up spending more in 4 days at NYC than they did in 6 at DC. All the muesuems and monuments in DC are free, so there's a huge amount of the budget freed up right there. You could spend more on the hotel that way.
What ever you do, make sure it's memorable, and fun for both of you.

We had a 12 days in French Polynesia, we custom booked our trip and visited, Moorea, Bora Bora and Rangiroa.
Moorea is amazing with great snorkeling, diving, great places to stay (Sheraton Moorea in a Over water bungalow), food is amazing. Bora Bora is overpriced and overrated. If you want your own private island go to Rangiroa and stay at the Kia Ora Sauvage. There are 5 bungalows, running water, but no power. You get 3 amazing meals a day, get to visit nearby deserted islands, lounge in the sun, or whatever you want. The host at the Sauvage is amazing, we were the only people on the island beside the host, his wife, and 2 cleaning ladies which we never saw. If you want a magical time Moorea or Rangiroa is the best choice. The tour company was Islands in the Sun.

I think Cancun is really fun, as long as it is not spring break. It is cheap. It's fun to go to a foreign country that kisses your rear. The water is filtered, so you won't get sick. If you don't have much money, the all inclusive hotels do a pretty good job.

The Maldives - one of the most beautiful places on earth. You can rent huts where you can see the ocean through your coffee table and snorkel off your patio - awesome!
