I-5 or Hwy 101 would be the quickest.

If you want a scenic drive, Take Hwy 1 along the coast (its a great drive...beautiful).

You can take the 5 North straight up. This is the fasted route, but is mainly driving through farmland and not much to look at or places to stop.

The 101 North will also take you to San Fran - add about 2 hours driving time (or less). It drive along the coast for part of the ride, and inland for part - but is a very nice drive, nice towns to stop in for lunch or just to stretch.

The most scenic route is to take highway 1 - this follows the coast going through Big Sur, Monterey and other wonderful cities and beaches. It is a much slower drive with windy roads in part - but amazing views. If you have the time and have never driven the coast - I highly recommend taking the 1. If you are in a hurry to get there - take the 5.

Another option is you can get cheap airline tickets on Southwest Airlines - look into flying from Burbank to Oakland - may be cheaper than gas.

101 North. The 101 ends in San Francisco, winds through the city for a few miles, and goes over the Golden Gate Bridge (as 1/101) before becoming a freeway again in Marin County.

You can also take PCH (Hwy 1). It's a gorgeous drive, but it also doubles your driving time.

I'm from Los Angeles, recently moved to SF. I find that I-5 to 580 is the quickest. You lose a lot of time cutting over to 101 on the 152 through gilroy. But 101 and 1 are far more scenic. Have fun.

I drive this every two weeks. I-5 is the fastest route. Exit the 152 toward San Jose/Hollister/Gilroy and drive toward Gilroy . Signs will direct you from there. The 101 has a lot more stops and scenery but it will take you a couple of hours more.

uh...maybe you should take some lessons from an expert...driving instructions via internet will likely end up in a disaster....but i'll give you a hint: gas pedal is on the right!
