someone dies and a love one files a partition on the will what does that mean

Well, you used the term partition, which doesn't really mean much. If you meant the term petition, it means a great more.

It could mean that the loved one is either excluded in the will, (and thinks its inappropriate,i.e. the will is invalid), it means that the loved one is a spouse, and your state has what is called an Elective Share, or it means that they have filed to have the will admitted to probate.. If it is the last one, this is a normal process, and is the first step in administering the estate.

Why don't you asked the person. If they won't answer you, find a lawyer in your state and ask them to look into it for you. They will charge you an hour or two of time and then be able to answer your questions. If you need a lawyer and don't know one, contact your state or local bar association for a referral

I think it means the same as contesting a will.
Not agreeing with something in it ,not feeling the person was competent when they drew it up .
Hope this helps some what .
