There are several tiers to this question. First, they exist because man feels a duty, or perhaps better, an opportunity to guide or control his fellow man. Through religion, we can better control / guide those who feel the need for guidance or feel the need to be led by others, not wanting the responsibility of their own purpose and existence on their shoulders alone.
Doing this in the name of God makes it all the more viable to amass followers, but you need to form your own set of regulations that sets you apart from the already existing religions, thus a new religion is born.
Religions also exist since man, who wants to believe in a Supreme being, cannot accept the tenets of one particular faith and thus looks to yet another that better fits his/her views of what worship should be. A religion that fits the bill. This exists in
Judaism, Christianity and some of the Eastern faiths.
Basically, the majority of us want to believe on a Supreme being, giving us the rules by which to live our lives. Belonging to a religion, sets us free of the responsibility of learning these rules for ourselves as they are taught to us through the Religious leaders.

Used to be religion was used to explain things that had no explanation...what are the lights in the sky...sorts of questions. Then it became a mechanism by which groups of people were brought together despite their differences and given a social code to live by, and frequently a rudimentary education.
In many cases it seems to have ultimately (d)evolved into a money grubbing enterprise used to separate people from their sense and money and into factions, and justify socially unacceptable behavior...in the name of .
What religion SHOULD do is supply comfort and community, while giving people faith that will reward them for living up to certain moral /social norms.

Because mankind wants to understand. The funny thing is, that no matter where we're from - from Egypt to South America to Europe to a remote island, when we dream up our religions we all come up with the same God! We just give Him or Her a different name.

The irrationality of religion has a scientific basis. It goes back to our cave man days when man was very insecure living in a hostile environment. The cerebral cortex of our brain (the complex thinking apparatus) is a relatively recent addition.
The more primitive underlying limbic system, the seat of our ancient emotions or innate temperaments, is in all of us. Humans use both systems. In times of trouble, people still pray for intervention by the god(s). Prayers are requests by persons to have the laws of the universe repealed in their favor.
People who are rational, relying on their cerebral cortex, look at all the absurdities in religion. Christian dogma expects people to believe the fairy tale of Noah's ark, although it is patently impossible to squeeze even samples of billions of the world's animals into one small ark. Rational persons consider such stories ludicrous.
The bible account of the creation of man and the universe is in such contradiction to irrefutable facts that a rational person cannot help but laugh about such fantasies.

I believe there are 2 reason's, #1.) People needs too hold someone responsible for there screw ups, for doing bad stuff, or they need to hold someone responsible for the things others do bad to them. #2.) We technically don't need religion, for we humans are far stronger then we give ourselves credit for. We are capable of working through anything in our way. We just don't believe in ourselves that much, we always think "God" has something to do with it.

it was originally invented to help keep people obedient. from prehostory, they invented the lake spirit to kee kids out of deep water, bad demons to keep people away from where they shouldn't be...then it became "the gods" that didn't want you to do something because they would punish you. then, when the ancient egyptians deities were feared because they could harm you. evenyually, around the time egypt became christian, they used this to help control people.
