if u read the website that schreken left (the one at the bottom). It clearly states that what a lot of people think they know about wolverines is based on information from trappers and not based on actual facts..it clearly states that in Idaho..wolverines are preyed upon mostly by mountain lions..and that is based on actual facts..not only would a cougar defeat a wolverine, they also prey on them.

While the cougar has the advantage of size and speed, the wolverine's skin is much thicker than other animals that the cougar comes across. Also, the wolverine can come underneath and attack the soft under belly of the cougar.

Wolverines are notorious and vicious animals. Cougars are quick and nasty as well, but cougars tend to shy away from more active and loud animals. A wolverine may not be able to make itself look bigger, but it can sound a lot meaner and could discourage the cougar into retreat. If a wolverine can scare an adult bear away from its own food, and a cougar would never attack an adult bear, how well would a cougar really do against a wolverine?

If they were to get into a fight, the cougar would win only if the fight went for a few seconds. The longer the fight, the more the cougar will lose - since longer fights have resulted with cougars losing their prey and getting severely injured. Since the wolverine would provide a tougher test regarding a kill ... the cougar would have less of a chance for victory than many would perceive.

Wolverine takes the win. It would prove too strong for the cougar to handle efficiently and effectively.

In general, a cougar would win; however, it would likely be a somewhat hollow victory.
There is a reason that most large predators leave wolverines (and their cousins, badgers) alone - first, being also related to skunks (the family mustelidae contains such various species as skunks, fishers, weasels, mink, badgers, stoats, and martens), they can emit a really foul odor that will send many adversaries packing. Second, not only are they very powerful for their size, they are armed with sharp claws and sturdy bone-crushing teeth that are not unlike two other famous sets of jaws in the animal kindgom: the spotted hyena and the Tasmanian devil, neither of which are related. These jaws also enable them to dispatch caribou and other ungulates that get bogged down in deep snow or are winter-weakened.

Therefore, a cougar that decides to pick a battle to the finish with a wolverine (there have been rare cases where this has happened, and the cougar manages to kill the wolverine, or badly wound it) is risking a lot - since cougars are solitary hunters, any injury that could make for impaired movement could eventually spell death for the cat.

So I would say that, barring extreme circumstances, a cougar would simply walk the other way if it encountered a wolverine. However, if for whatever reason the cougar pressed the attack, it runs a high risk of debilitating injury, though - therefore I'd say the fight would go to the cat, but with the very real possibility of suffering a debilitating injury.

Well...the cougar would probably not go near the wolverine..but in the event of an actual fight, I'd bet on the wolverine. They are viscious. The cougar would be more likely to back off before the wolverine. Wolverines, like badgers and fishers, will not give up a fight. They are tough animals. Many animals around here are known to get in the way and die by the jaws of wolverines and fishers.

I would say that the cougar would win if the fight even happened. Not saying that the wolverine wouldn't do some serious damage to the cougar in the process. But just out of the pure size and strength of the cougar, it would win hands down.

If you could get them to fight the cougar would
almost certainly win simply because of its size and
weight. However both of them would have more
sense than to fight if they weren't somehow forced
to. I have seen a film of a wolverine making a
grizzly bear retreat from a deer carcass, but it
wasn't because of its fighting ability. In fact, as
far as I could see the two animals never even came in contact with each other. The wolverine
just made so much of a pest of itself by squalling
and rushing at the bear that the bear finally just
ripped a piece off the deer and went off with it.
