Mother Nature waters your lawn in the early morning (dew) therefore it is best to follow her lead. Since this is somewhat inconvenient as most of us have a morning routine that doesn't include turning on and off water, you can buy a timer that will turn on and turn off after a preset time. Set it up the night before when you have the time.

Watering at night generally makes a lawn susceptible to fungus growth, especially if you cut with a dull blade. Watering during the day is at best inefficient since much of it evaporates before or just after it hits the ground. At worst, watering in the hot sun may burn the grass.

If you are trying to grow new grass seed, frequent light watering is best. If you are watering to prevent drought brown-out, once a week heavily is best, since this will promote deeper root development.

Happy growing.

Early morning as stated before. Cause it gives the water chance to reach the roots, but not sit for long (like overnight) to create mold and mildew. Watering in the evening can cause these problems and others. During the day, the sun and heat evaporates the water before it has a chance to be sucked up by the roots.

At night is the best time to water your lawn because during the day it will evaporate too quickly especially if it's hot out.

Simple. When it needs it. However, the safest time to water your lawn to prevent potential problems is early in the morning right before sunrise.

Ask any trained expert, NEVER WATER AT NIGHT! Those of you who choose to water in the P.M. are the same ones who will be asking for answers for all the problems they have with their lawn or plant problems. My amswer to them is their problems come from watering at night. Wet grass & plants are asking for problems. One answer above hit me as a neat way to remember. Would you wear wet jammies to bed at night?

In the evenings as long as it is not freezing during the night or in the morning. Not in the middle of the day because the water crystals are kind of like a magnifying glass and will burn the grass.
