Computer motherboards have a connection that allow lights to turn on and off indicating the harddrive is on and processing info (reading and writing to the drive itself).

IDE is the type of drive itself. Other types are SCSI, Firewire (IEEE), and USB. FYI, IDE is the original type of drive that goes back to the first computers and is still used today.
