We should all learn to speak a little Spanish, if for no other reason so we'll know what they are saying about us behind our backs when they think we can't understand them.

Up here, they're trying to make it so the kids have to take Arabic rather than Spanish. Yeah, America is made up of many cultures, but they should still learn our language. That's like Americans settling down in other countries and demanding they speak English.

As our country gets bigger as far as a need for more jobs, immigrants from Mexico and other spanish-speaking countries come to the United States. In order to have a successful career (not in all cases but in a lot) and to get a higher salary, you should be able to speak spanish because it is the second most spoken language in the United States.

Why not? It helps them to get more job oppurtunities. Here in Canada we all learn basic french in school because many jobs only hire people who are Bilingual. Also I think it is very good for anyone to know more than one language. Est que je peu alle a la salle du bain? Je ne pas parle en francais. Quelle temps fait il? Je m'appel Kelly! Seriously it is a good thing to know! I remember all of this and more from french class in grade school and I can communicate with french speaking people and it has helped me alot! When I worked at the pet store I had people come in that only speak french, I wouldn't have been able to help them if not for what I learned in school. Aurevoir!

PS for all you people who said that people who move there should speak english because that is the language...Wake up Native Americans were there before you so by the same token you should have learned to speak thier language and only thier language...GROW UP It is good to speak as many languages as you can!! How would you feel if the indigenous peoples of north america demanded we only speak ojibwa, or sioux??? Wouldnt be too happy would ya? So dont push your language on others instead rise above and use your intelligence to learn thier language instead of being linguistically racist!

I do not think it is required, but I am not from your school district.

However, learning a second language will open more opportunities in the business world for your children. We are becoming more global than ever before and learning languages is a key factor for staying ahead of others.

Why would you want to discourage that?

i think that there should be a new law in the US that states that our children have to learn a second language...no matter what it is, as long as they learn a second language. i had the opportunity to learn a second language as a child b/c i lived overseas, and now i have an easier time learning other languages and getting around when i travel to other countries. when i have children, i want them to learn at least 2 languages other than english. i think it will be to their benefit as adults.

No its not. In my area it is a requirement. I think it is because in a few years spanish will be equal to english in this country. So many people refuse to speak english now, that there is no choice.

I am not allowing my children to learn spanish when they begin school. I believe we are in america and we speak english and if you don't speak english then you don't get conversed with. ^.^ we shouldn't have to cater to anyone!

same reason people want to learn Japanese,German or any other language, is it wrong to want to expand your knowledge? and why is it you had to bring up Spanish? are you prejudice. you could have said a foreign language.
don't forget we we,re all immigrants at one time so it,s not fair to be picking on just one race.
