So what is it that terrorist are so pissed off about? Why did the rich kid Osama become a terrorist and turn on the United States. Aside from all the bull-**** put out about it, O'sama is idealist who started out being pissed off at his own Saudi Government.
The Saudi Government is blamed for the unemployment at home for the young, the harsh punishment for anyone that questions their authority and the backwards nature of Saudis government being almost a middle ages form of government. The Royal Family is spoiled and requires a king's fortune to support. And of course, the Rulers have close ties with the Western World, like the Bush Family in the US.
In contrast, the wannabe branch of Islam is extremely conservative and full of fundamentalist who will twist any enemies of Islams head off.
The only reason the religious institution do not destroy the Ruler Class is that the Ruling Class pays off the church to keep there hands off the controls of government.
In other words, the The Saudi Government and Religion are corrupt.
Young hard line Religious Type like O'sama or individuals who come from wealthy families took up arms against the Royal Family and started an ingrown revolution to relieve the Country of the present form of government.
Why do they hate the United States? Because they figured out where the money comes from that supports kingships like the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia.
The United States could have changed it's policy to reducing our dependence of the Persian Gulf States by getting into higher fuel efficiency. But no, we bet that we could control Saudi Arabia.

No - usually it just encourages more people to take their place, especially when you are talking about terrorism in the name of religion, or a Jihad.

It's not like waging a war against a country, with clearly defined boundries or a government with whom you can negotiate a surrender, and because of this there is no way of measuring when the war on terror is completed.

It is a complete oxymoron.

Terrorism has to be fought. If left unchecked, civilization as we know it will be non-existent. Sure, there will be people around, but it will be a kill or be killed lifestyle. You could trust no-one.

Hurray for the USA! If it weren't for our unselfish actions to rid society of terrorists, the world would be doomed for sure. Anyone who thinks terrorism should not be defeated is in fact a terrorist that fears for his or her life. They fear not being able to control people to meet their needs and wants. They fear losing their so-called superiority. They fear that they can't force you into their way of thinking.

Well, it can't be defeated with calm, cool reasoning. Terrorists can't relate to that. So sadly, warfare is the only other means. However, I can't imagine that every terrorist can be weeded out and defeated. It would be nice though.....

No, Because there are people that are not afraid to die, Warfare is intended to scare your opponent into believing that not surrendering will bring about their death.

Not at all. Warfare only makes the terrorists more angry and hate us more.

It cannot be defeated completely, but it keeps them off of our soil. I'd rather take the fight to them than be fighting on American soil.
