Think of it like this, if you were watching a ship sail away into the horizon it would soon disappear. This is because the world is not flat. I hope this helped. My teacher explained this to me like this.

Don't you let 'em heckle you! This is a very cool question!
We know the world is round a few ways. First, just like you know a basketball is round. You stand a suitable distance away so that you can see the whole thing and it looks round. Except, in the Earth the only way to do that is with a rocket. We sent people up, they took pictures and it looks round.
More certainly, we see other planets from here. You, for instance, can see the moon. It's a body in space just like Earth and it looks round, doesn't it? We know it's not just a flat circle, but a sphere because of the shadows the sun casts on it as it orbits.
More certainly still, if you get in a plane and fly due west (by any measure - magnetic west, looking at the stars, etc.), you will fly over the place you started. How could this happen if the world were flat?
You keep right on asking great questions! Some of the greatest inventors in the world asked questions that seemed obvious to everyone around them but had very, very surprising answers!

That's actually a pretty profound question!
The best personal experience I can draw on here is seeing the 7-mile bridge in the Florida keys. I looked like it curved down over the horizon.
The "Did we just take their word for it?" part is what got me. One should wonder how many things we "Take their word for it" about. History is written by the People that won. What's in the text books is "approved" information. Politics tends to put a spin on everything.

Look out over the terrain..One can see no more than 8 miles.. that is because the world is round and you have to go another mile or so to see another mile off in the distance.

Whose word? Have you ever been in an airplane or a boat on the ocean? You can see that the world is round.

Well, there's satellite imaging and surely that shows that the earth is round. And the astronauts at the space station can surely see that the earth is round. Even from the moon, I bet that you could see that the earth is round.

you really don't know if the world is round unless you travel around the world. So i guess that we had just taken the words for it

Yep, o.k. you're right: because the moon and the sun are square, just like all the other planets, the Earth must be square too. Case closed! Mystery solved!
