Depends on which war - We Were Soldiers, Hamburger Hill, Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, The Big Red 1, POW - The Escape, The Boys in Company C. Except for Pvt. Ryan and The Big Red 1 which are about WWII all the others are about VietNam.

The best, most realistic production I have ever seen is Band of Brothers. It's actually an HBO mini series co directed by Tom Hanks. Should be easy to rent or buy on DVD.
Apocalypse Now is Awesome. A great movie comedy but with plenty of pathos is Good Morning, Vietnam.

The Killing Fields (1984, Directed by Roland Joffe), took 3 Oscars - the only war movie that made me cry for more than 10 minutes!

In my opinion, the two masterpieces have to be Forrest Gump and Schindler's List, since these movies are not just about war, it's about the life stories of the people involved in it, which I found very emotional and fascinating. I like the human side of these movies.

Great Escape, To Hell and Back, Kelley's Heroes, Dirty Dozen, Von Ryan's Express, there are a lot of wonderful old WWII movies with John Wayne. There are so many I can't list them all, but I was raised watching them all and am grateful my Dad shared his war experiences with me as much as he could talk about the actual events.
