I sleep in his bed and smell his pillow at night. But that only works because it's my fiance. It would not work very well in some other situations.

You deal with it by learning to be not so dependent or possessive. Sometimes it's simply a lack of trust or security. You have to know what they are doing and have to be assured they are thinking of you. If a person can't go away for a few days without it creating an issue, then there may be something a little obsessive going on.
Whether or not they should be "checking in" really depends on the current relationship.

If it's a long separation, find a way to communicate. Sign-up with a discount long distance service like OneSuite.com, and keep in touch by email and IM.
If it's a short separation, get a life! Enjoy the time to yourself. See other friends, do your own thing. That way the next time you see each other you'll have something new to talk about.

im going through the same thing!!!
what i do is i email this person everyday like a journal entry...cuz i talked to them everyday and every night and i basically told them everything....it makes me feel so much better..and its working very well for me!!
or you can simply keep a journal...and jus pretend your talking to them like there right in front of you
