A grandfather law is an old law is accepted practice If it has been in effect for a long time and even tho it may not seem right ,it has never been changed. People who live in a city on land that can have horses right in the middle of the city may live on property that has "grandfather "rights to keep livestock. The new people cant have the horses because of new property laws. Sounds strange but true. After reading answers

Laws are just laws. Whether they've been around a year or a century.

You may be talking about so-called grandfather clauses. Those are basically exceptions to new laws for things that are already being done a certain way.

The Constitution does not allow for Ex Post Facto laws, which are laws that make something criminal after it has already been done. Nor can states just arbitrarily change laws that have adverse effects on existing contractual obligations. The same concept applies to many changes in zoning ordinances.

So, many laws and ordinances have clauses that say something is now illegal if you do it after this point, but if you've been doing it for a while you have some amount of time before you need to stop. Those are sometimes called grandfather clauses, because they are exemptions based on what happened prior to the current law.

Old laws are not called grandfather laws--you can get "grandfathered" in under old laws when new laws are created.

Some old laws are called "Blue sky laws". They are actually pretty funny. Use Google to look up the ones for your state.

The common term for laws that are no longer enforceable yet are still on the books is "Blue Laws".
