How do you signal your intentions to the driver directly behind you, so that person will give you enough room to back up?

I've seen situations in which traffic is moving very slowly ---less than 1 or 2 mph. I'll call the vehicle trying to park, "A", and the vehicle directly behind it, I'll call"B"..... "B" pulls right up behind "A" before "A" 's backup lights come on, making it impossible for "A" to back into the parking place. I've seen this problem at its worst in tourist areas---Carmel, CA,... Lake Placid, NY.....Maybe there is no answer to this problem. Maybe what we need is a popup sign reading "please give me enough room to back into this parking place"

Pull over and block half the parking space with your car, come to a full stop, and put your directional signal on. If necessary, open your window and wave for him to pass you.

No vehicle should be so close behind you that you don't have room to start the manouevre!

You signal to indicate that you're pulling in (just as you would if you were turning off) and then you park. The person behind you should wait, or go round only if there is sufficent room to do so without endangering oncoming traffic and/or hindering you.

It is accepted to use your turn signal in the direction you are parking to let anyone behind you know of your intentions.

Not perfect: stop the car, signal right, shift to reverse so your backup lights are on.

your supposed to pull past the space with your signal blinking toward the curb. but almost nobody knows that so they don't know to give you enough room.

Good drivers see just what you are doing.

Problem is there are so few good drivers!
