i really like him and i think there are some signs he could like me e.g he likes to touch me, he talks to everyone about me, hes never said a bad word about me and ive known him a year, he always makes jokes about us being a couple and he calls me the best ever all the time. i really dont know what to do i dont wanna ask him incase he says he isent gay i really dont want to loose him as a friend, are there any signs i could look out for or maybe even some kinda tests

Does he know you are gay?
There are no tests or tricks to find out, you have to ask. Be careful, because sometimes if we want something very badly, we imagine things and read 'meanings' into a person's actions and words that are not always the real meaning behind them.
You could tell him you have something important to tell him about yourself, that you want him to know because he is a good friend. Then tell him you are gay (or 'think you might be gay', if you prefer). If he is too, he might tell you then. If he isn't, and he is a good friend, he probably knew you were anyway.
Depending on his reaction, you could then go on to tell him you have strong feelings for him. He may not be gay as you seem to wish for, but a good friend is worth a lot more than a casual sex partner.

No tests. No signs that you havent already mentioned in your question. Just ask him out on a 'friendly date'. Go out for some food, catch a movie and then spend some time together. After that make a subtle move such as holding hands or 'friendly touching' (nothing sexual). After you do this you'll know by then your answer.

Besides, how good of friends are you? You should know if he is gay or not
let's see...the fact that he likes to touch you should be a sign...straight men don't touch other guys!

If he already know's that you're gay then wait a little longer and see if things progress... make a few moves that are a little more then just friendly but nothing too out there. If he doesn't know you're gay then you should probably tell him to either let him know and tell you that he is either gay or not.

You could gently push the boundaries of personal space, and see how comforable he is with you - arm round him and stuff.
Gradually progress until he seems uncomfortable or stops you maybe?

He likes you....when you're talking to him try touching his shoulder or his arm and see what happens. If he's not gay he will be uncomfortable and then you'll have your answer.

direct approach is the best. get in a private situation with him and "push the envelope". touch him inappropriately and see how it goes. he will either encourage you or push you away.
your relationship will change no matter what. i hope it changes for the better for you.
