you need to set a routine. Kids need routine. They need a set bed time that you are firm about 8 or 9 pm. Then put him in bed and leave him there if he gets up bring him back to bed. After a few days he will stay on his own, and due to boredom with fall asleep eventually he will start going right to sleep. Make sure he is in his own room, not your room. The first few nights will be hard, but you are not sleeping anyways :) I have always had my daughter on a routine, she is now 8 and still follows it (bed time is now 9pm, was 8 until this year. You are the parent, you are in charge. A child who gets adequate sleep is a healthy happy child. Do not allow afternoon naps that last longer than 1 hour until the routine is set. Your routine should include roughly what time meals are eaten also. A good afternoon nap is after lunch when the tummy is full 12:30 or 1:00. Good luck, I know it is hard work but is worth it!

I also have a little guy, and he woke up often too. He is doing much better and this is what we do.
Start with making sure all the obvious is taken care of before you put him to bed (diaper is dry, and is well fed.)
You could try warm milk or formula before he goes to bed to sooth him and fill him up a little bit. Also, getting a nightly routine of dinner, bath, book, bottle is relaxing and is good bonding time for babies and thier mom or dad. This helps my son a lot.
Get him on a schedule - I know it's hard - but it will help a ton. Make sure he plays alot and feels loved by you. Kids are smart, and more sensitive than some might think. Don't let him watch TV before bed - it can be overstimulating.
Don't let him sleep if he will be waking up too close to bed time. (For example, if you put him to bed at 8:00, try to make it so that he is nice and tired at around 2:30 and sleep until 4:00.) Leave at least 4 hours between the last nap and bedtime.
This is a big one -Let him cry to sleep, but only as long as you check to make sure that he isn't hungry or wet - then let him cry to sleep. It's hard at first, but it gets better. You might need to for your sanity sake. If he doesnt fall asleep within at the most 40 minutes - then talk to your doctor.
I would get some good liturature on little ones that age.
Goodluck -

Try this it works great on my one year old. Get him up around 7 or 8am. Give him breakfast and let him play until 11 then give him lunch. At noon put him down for a nap. let him sleep until 2 or 3. Then try to put him down for the night around 8 or 9pm. Also try giving him a warm glass of milk at night(don't lay him down with it though). Start trying this on a weekend though that way he has a better chance of adjusting to it before you go back to work on Monday.

Don't let him take late afternoon naps. If he goes to the sitters then make sure that they don't let him take an afternoon nap. Also after 8pm don't give him anything with sugar in it, it might be keeping him awake. My 3 1/2 month old don't like to sleep, so I know what you are going through.

Avoid naps late in the day. If he takes an evening nap, make it a short one! Also, get into a nightly routine. Kids love routine. It prepares him for bed.

dont give him naps anymore. wake him up reallllly early and if u have a baby sitter or who ever takes care of him, tell them to keep him up all day. NO sleep and lots of activities.
he will for sure be tired and want to go to bed.

Well you could give him a lil bit of cough syrup...I take it to get sleep myself or you can tire him out a few hours before bed and then have quiet time.
