As someone previously mentioned, it is caused by bacteria getting into your urethra. Because a woman's urethra is shorter than a man's, it occurs much more frequently in women.
I used to get them regularly, and here's what I've been told along the way (although I don't know how effective each one is):
Wear white, cotton underwear.
Avoid tight pants.
Take showers (no baths, especially bubble baths).
When you go #2 (for lack of a better term), wipe front to back.
Whenever you have sex, urinate afterward.
Drink cranberry juice (I don't like it, so I actually take cranberry pills everyday as a preventative measure).

First things first.. Blatter is spelled bladder. Second.. There are several reasons one can get a bladder infection. Bad hygiene, sexual intercourse, holding it too long. Anything that can cause bacteria in that area can lead to a bladder infection. I've had 3 and they are so NOT fun. Just keep clean, pee after you have sex, and urinate when you need to.
