First, Jefferson would be the man because he wrote the Declaration of Independence which detailed all of the abuses of King George III on the colonies. Many of those abuses involved the abuse of the citizens' civil liberties such as freedom of speech and of the press. Jefferson also believed in the equality of all men which today has been extended to mean all people regardless of race or gender. Jefferson would be appalled by laws such as the Patriot Act which infringes on many of our civil liberties as Americans. Additionally, I am not quite sure that all Americans are treated equally under Bush's presidency.

Secondly, Thomas Jefferson would be the picture of a classic Republican president. He did not believe in big government and during his two terms moved to decrease the size of government and cut taxes. He believed that people should be responsible for their own lives and did not want to have the government be too involved in the lives of the citizens- especially the national government. Jefferson would be disappointed that our national debt is as high as it is (he worked to eliminate it during his time) and he would be appalled that the national government has gotten involved in such personal issues as abortion, gay marriage, and Terri Shiavo (sp).

Third, Jefferson's own personal views would make him want to slap President Bush. He did not believe that the government should promote businesses or help them in any way (he envisioned an agrarian nation) so supporting the oil industry would be a no no. Additionally, Jefferson firmly believed that there should be a clear separation between church and state. He tried to keep his personal religious views to himself. He would certainly not want them to influence government policy.

It would be neat for him to come back...

Thomas Jefferson.

Jefferson believed that war was just when the cause was just... If he could see how Bush has turned the conflicts of the world to his own personal interests I'm sure he'd be first in line.

I'm not sure whether it would be Jefferson first and Franklin second, or Franklin first and Jefferson second... Franklin would be shaking his head at the lack of humanity and common sense; Jefferson would be yelling "What have you done to the Constitution and your people?"
