Well if he doesnt know she is an alcoholic then no he is not breaking the law. Only the person going to that doctor can give that type of information to him. On the other hand if he does know then yes he is definately breaking the law.

All medications come with warnings and most of them say not to use alcohol, drive or operate machinery, you shouldn't take this medication if you are using antidepressants, MOI A's, or lactating, and any number of warnings will be stated.
It doesn't mean the Doctor shouldn't prescribe a medication to " a depressed cab driving alcoholic on blood thinners that is lactating".
It means you have been prescribed a medication to treat an ailment and been given information on the drug based on the medical history provided.
It is up to the cab driving alcoholic lactating mom.
Is it unlawful? If the Doctor is made aware of the alcoholism then they used his/her Medical knowledge to determine what medication is to be prescribed.
ADD ON response:
you said "he is her regular doctor and couldn't possibly know she is an alcoholic"
additional add-on:
You said the doctor knows she is an alcoholic?
Sounds like she is an abuser of more than alcohol.
I understand your heart ache here. But you can't blame the Doctor for treating her.
If she is using the medication as a "kicker" she is merely feeding her own addiction.
So whatever the "medication" is? You can bet she knew the interaction beforehand since she is adding it to the use of alcohol.
I am sure you would like a resolution to this but her fate is not in your hands. It seems like you may want to help her but your said that "it has caused ME so much sorrow" and "I am now separated".
Do you not think that it has caused the both of you sorrow? And wouldn't the both of you be separated?

Of course since he is not prescribing any alcohol containing medicine. And the inscription that says on the prescription label not to mix with alcohol is a safety warning for the benefit of the patient. Were the doctor to prescribe medication that contains alcohol as do some cough medicines then there may be some liability but the patient also has the responsibility of monitoring what he puts in his mouth if he is of sound mind and being a alcoholic does not mean that the person is incapable.

While it might not be the brightest thing I've ever heard of, it certainly is not illegal. It is the responsibility of the user to not mix it with alcohol. If they cannot do that, they need to inform the doctor that an alternative medication needs to be prescribed.
There is also a medication called "anabuse" that can be prescribed to an alcoholic. While taking anabuse, if they drink any alcohol, it makes them VIOLENTLY ill and they don't want to drink anymore. Might be worth a shot. Good luck.

You know that is a treaty question...Let me try and think like a doctor...If the alcoholic needs this medication to get well and I think the doctor would tell the patience, that he cannot drink any alcohol at all if he did ,It could cause serious problems and you might have to be put in the hosiptal...Yes it is lawful...

Whether the patient is an alcoholic or not has absolutely nothing to do with it. If the medication cannot be taken with alcohol then that fact must be disclosed to the patient.

Is it legal? I guess it is. The saddest part of this is that the doctor doesn't know his patient well enough to not prescribe the medication. We are a disconnected people

Yes. Not every alcoholic drinks. Some are on the wagon. Even if they do drink it is still "lawful" but it might not be the best thing to do.

No problem with that, the recipient has been told not to drink with the medication and to do otherwise he is putting himself at risk.
