First, take a deep breath. Then, emphathize with them. Let them know that you understand their frustration. Repeat their problem back to them so they know that you understand them. Then tell them how you'll do your best to solve it.

Anger and frustration may continue to exude from their voice, but your reaction doesn't have to mirror them. Remember who you are.

Depends on how much leverage they have on you. As long as they're "customers", presumably you're working there and are obligated to serve them. At my job, though, that doesn't mean I have to shoot the **** with them any longer than it takes to get them their ice cream (I work at an ice cream stand). When they're rude to me, or even brusque, I just give them whatever they ordered without a word. On the other hand, customers who show their manners (as astonishingly few do) usually get the time of day and some small talk from me.
In my line of work, if you're competent (as I am, partly because scooping ice cream is not at all hard), no customer is truly difficult, because it is, in the end, my job to serve them.
P.S. If Melissa's advice falls through and you can't "kill them with your kindness", you can always try the related ploys of "kill them with silverware" or "don't kill them but make them wish they were never born".
P.P.S. You might be getting more germane advice if you had specified your profession.

Customers are always right. You need to smile at them all the time. They will come back and buy more stuff. If a customer keeps giving you problem, like deliberately put lots of salt in food, you should never exchange that dish, otherwise he/she will come back with the same or similar problem again and again. I have been waiter for many years, and I know that once I give something to a customer for free, he/she will come back and ask for the same thing or more again.

I work at McDonalds and I know all about difficult customers. I have found the only way to really deal with them is just to smile and deal with it. You can't act like it bothers you because they will try even harder to make you upset. Dont worry about it.

Get out of Asia. Asian customers are the worst. There culture teaches that the customer is always right and should be catered to in all circumstances.

I remember I worked in a video store when I was young... a guy had a movie out on his account.. and swore he returned it.. long story short.. I got cussed out by the guy in front of everyone.. I just looked at him and smiled and said.. DUDE.. it's just a MOVIE....don't have stroke over it.. and if you keep cussing at me I will call the police and have you thrown out because there are children in here and you are upsetting other customers.. in short I made him look like the aZZ he was.. works everytime.. and on bosses too.. just flip it!

I used to work in a resturant and the customers were sometimes horrible. I just thought to myself "I'm so glad I'm not that sorry person, they must have a lot of problems", and just screamed in my head but smiled to them. Sometimes you have to deal with that, you want the money right??

If someone is giving you a hard time because you can't do what he asked, just say that you are sorry, but your boss won't let you do whatever it is that they asked for.

If it gets really bad, simle and ask them if they would like to speak to your supervisor instead.

And don't take it personally. Some of them are just trying to see what they can get away with.

Don't always smile, angry people will think u trying to be funny. Remain calm, hold your temper. When a customer loss his temper, his mind is not clear, you need to be in clearer mind to be in control of the situation.

Easy, you dont take it personal and let them vent and try to agree with them as much as possible and make things right with the guidlines that you are allowed and finally feel sorry for them if they really blow a gasket.
