You can spread a line of cinnamon around your house. Ants won't cross it and you can buy it in bulk at warehouse stores.

My wife and I used to live in FL and we got these every year. We tried everything: bait, traps, terro, mint, tarragon, parsley (just kidding on some of these) and nothing worked.
So... we called an exterminator. They came out and looked at the house, the ants, our patio, and our lawn. They took the cat and the dog into consideration, then delivered the news: there are pet-safe professional chemicals they can use, mainly because sprays and fogs won't work on sugar ants and bighead ants (we had both, who knew, they look similar). Then he dropped a bomb: the ants may have a colony in our walls, but if so, it's just a side-nest. The main nest for the ants is under the front lawn, outside!
The solution: keep a cleaner kitchen; dry, pet-safe chemicals professionally applied to the lawn, and out outside patio, and a different pet-safe checmical indoors around the entry points. That got rid of them for good, never had another problem again. The catch is, the exterminator had to keep coming back, but for $20 to $40 a month, it was worth it to never deal with another ant.

Try and locate where they are coming from and dose the area with ant spray. We had the same problem last sumar and found they were coming around the widow frame around the sink. We completely removed all food from the kitchen counter and sprayed around the window frame on the inside, and outside of the house. That got rid of them for us.

Go here:

http://www.perma-guard.com

and buy Diatomaceous Earth, theirs is food grade--it is harmless to humans and pets. It will, however, kill anything with an exoskeleton, like ants and roaches and all your basic bugs. You might find DE at a graden center but be sure that you are getting a food grade product--you don't want the other kind.

This stuff works great on garden bugs also.

Spred fresh mint leaves across your doorways and window sills. Ants HATE Fresh mint.

Also use those little ant traps, they're safe to use around other pets like cats.

I don't know how to get rid of them but I do know if you put black pepper around the baseboards and the edges of you cabinets they will not come in. The pepper burns them. I have tried this and it worked well.
