When I knew him, he was way above average. After all these years, he must have just given up or lost all of his motivation, because now he's just average. I'll bet in a few more years he'll be well below average.

Answer one: The day the music died.

Answer two: You see, Joe was rather above average, as you mentioned. But as happens to people who fail to live up to their potential, Joe, handsome and popular, became lazy after high school and in an act of rebellion against his parents, enrolled in the local vo-tech instead of going to college. A few years later, his parents divorced, he started smoking weed in addition to smoking cigarettes, and his penchant for eating frozen dinners after work in front of the TV, and Twinkies at snack-time made him grow pudgy and lethargic. His good looks waned and as he began balding at the tender age of 26, he was forced to look for girls through online dating. The most logical choice happened to live only 30 miles away. Out of the three matches Joe was sent, this gal was the only one he felt comfortable communicating with; she, like he, wasn't as concerned with spelling and grammar as the other two matches were. Their open communication e-mails went something like this:

Hi Joe, haw r u? im reel fine! I wored a dubble shift today and boyan i tired. But its OK 'cause I git to C U at my unkles trackter pull! Can not waite!

(Joe's reply)
Well well well........ I hope your not to tire to se me pritty doll! never been to a pull befor....... is your uncle nise?
(etcetera)

She worked at the Tasty Freeze because she dropped out of high school, and her parents insisted she find work to remain under their roof. She had not been able to figure out how to post a picture on the site, but she and Joe decided to meet anyway at a tractor pull at the halfway point between their two towns.

Joe was only mildly disappointed when he met Jane at the pull. He recovered quickly, though, because she had a good heart and was enthusiastic about the tractors and about him. After sleeping together that night at the pull's designated hiway motel, Joe was hooked on Jane and knew they would make a good couple. And they did. They never fought, and they had few expectations of each other. When they discovered that Jane was pregnant, Joe did the right thing and married her.
The invitations were thus

You are cordially invited
to the wedding of
Plain Jane
and
Average Joe
on October 30,1983
at the Springfield Community Center
Reception to follow.
BYO Rice to throw at the happy couple as they speed away on their new Kawasaki (JUST MARIED!!!!!)

The moral of the story is that although Joe was steadily sinking into averageness before he started dating Plain Jane, she contributed to his final plunge in that direction by turning him on to tractor pulls. Maybe he might have met one of the grammar police girls who could have saved him from his averageness on a skiing trip or something. The process isn't usually reversible, though.
