She never reveals her name to the reading audience. She does tell it to a few others in the story, but only people she fully trusts. Atwood uses Offreds name as a tool, it is a gift that Offred gives as a sign of absolute trust. Her name isn't all that important, it is one of the symbols of the individuality she has lost, and her attempts to reclaim herself/her past.

I didn't think the author was directing her characterization at any one individual. If you're appealing to imagination..I would say Offred. Now I remember..their names were changed..I'd forgotten.
