Y=2x+3

3x+y=-17

3x+2x+3= -17
5x+3= -17
-3 -3
5x= -20
5 5
X=-4

Now put x in the y='s equation. You will find y. :)

Hope that helps!

y = 2x + 3 and 3x+y = 17

substituting the value of y in the second equation we get
3x +2x+3 = 17
5x = 17 - 3 = 14
x = 14/5 or 2 4/5
y = 2x+3 = 2(14/5)+3 = 28/5 + 3 = (28 + 15)/5 = 43/5 = 8 3/5

hence, x 14/5 and y = 43/5

Since the 1st equation is already solved for y, substitute the result into the 2nd equation

3x + 2x + 3 = -17
5x = -20
x = -4

Put this value for x into the 1st equation

y = 2(-4) + 3
y = -8 + 3
y = -5

To check, put your answers into the 2nd equation

3(-4) + (-5) = -17
-12 - 5 = -17
-17 = -17

It seems that one merely ignores the long part between the two equal signs and that leaves y=-17. The middle portion is not written correctly to be in an equation. It needs parentheses to make any sense, i.e. (2x+3)(3x+y)...but why bother with it at all? Just skip it and see it equals -17. One gets a messy 2xy if he expands the equation as I've written it. No need for it!!!

easy:

y = 2x + 3 ---------------- 1
3x + y = -17 --------------- 2

substitute 1 into 2:

3x + (2x + 3) = -17
5x + 3 = -17
5x = -17 - 3
5x = -20
x = -20 / 5
x = -4

substitute into any equation [let's do 1]:

y = 2x + 3
y = 2(-4) + 3
y = -8 + 3
y = -5

therefore,

x = -4
y = -5

y = 2x + 3
3x + y = -17

3x + (2x + 3) = -17
3x + 2x + 3 = -17
5x + 3 = -17
5x = -20
x = -4

y = 2x + 3
y = 2(-4) + 3
y = -8 + 3
y = -5

x = -4
y = -5
