GOOD LUCK...first, chew alot of sugarfree gum. Next, drink alot of water. My husband quit and he has gained twenty pounds, but is trying to control his hunger now. Also, if you are a believer like I am, PRAY!! PRAY!! PRAY!! My husband did, and the Lord took the taste out of his mouth. BEST WISHES TO YOU

This sounds stupid, but make up your mind that this is it. I did that 13 years ago. I do not touch cigarettes any more. Don't have a last one, just put them down, throw them out, give them away.

You can use all kinds of gum, or other stuff, but if you are ready to quit, you can go cold turkey. Remember to start exercising, and spend the money you save on something you really want - this is important. I bought a mountain bike, and paid myself off over time at the rate I use to smoke. Pack a day is $5 or what ever they cost where you live. So, 5 * 30 days a month, is $150 per month. You can get a nice bike for $500, less than 4 months worth of savings from not smoking anymore.

You are not a quitter! You are a health conscious person! All your life you are told 'quitters never win', but in this case you get back your breath and your circulation and your health, so you are a winner.

Buy some normal chewing gum for when you really feel like a cigarette. Don't think about it or talk about it too much or you will make it harder. Never go on about how much you need a cigarette, you'll make it worse. Just get on with it and try not to think about it too much. After a short while of not smoking you'll notice you have more cash so that'll be an incentive. Once you get past the first week it becomes progressively easier. Good luck and all the best with quitting.

(I'm glad you're quiting! :D)

Getting Ready to Quit

* Set a date for quitting. If possible, have a friend quit smoking with you.

* Notice when and why you smoke. Try to find the things in your daily life that you often do while smoking (such as drinking your morning cup of coffee or driving a car).

* Change your smoking routines: Keep your cigarettes in a different place. Smoke with your other hand. Don't do anything else when smoking. Think about how you feel when you smoke.

* Smoke only in certain places, such as outdoors.

* When you want a cigarette, wait a few minutes. Try to think of something to do instead of smoking; you might chew gum or drink a glass of water.

* Buy one pack of cigarettes at a time. Switch to a brand of cigarettes you don't like.
----------
On the Day You Quit
* Get rid of all your cigarettes. Put away your ashtrays.

* Change your morning routine. When you eat breakfast, don't sit in the same place at the kitchen table. Stay busy.

* When you get the urge to smoke, do something else instead.

* Carry other things to put in your mouth, such as gum, hard candy, or a toothpick.

* Reward yourself at the end of the day for not smoking. See a movie or go out and enjoy your favorite meal.
-----------------------
Staying Quit
* Don't worry if you are sleepier or more short-tempered than usual; these feelings will pass.

* Try to exercise-take walks or ride a bike.

* Consider the positive things about quitting, such as how much you like yourself as a non-smoker, health benefits for you and your family, and the example you set for others around you. A positive attitude will help you through the tough times.

* When you feel tense, try to keep busy, think about ways to solve the problem, tell yourself that smoking won't make it any better, and go do something else.

* Eat regular meals. Feeling hungry is sometimes mistaken for the desire to smoke.

* Start a money jar with the money you save by not buying cigarettes.

* Let others know that you have quit smoking-most people will support you. Many of your smoking friends may want to know how you quit. It's good to talk to others about your quitting.

* If you slip and smoke, don't be discouraged. Many former smokers tried to stop several times before they finally succeeded. Quit again.

If you need more help, see your doctor.

He or she may prescribe nicotine gum or a nicotine patch to help you break your addiction to cigarettes.

It's easier to stop than you think. People will come up to you and express clichéd "surprise" at your ability to quit, saying overdone things such as "It's so hard to do" and other such garbage.

If you ignore all the validation and claims of other ways to quit (gum, patch, etc.) you should be fine. You don't need to succumb to the "rationalization" of being a grouch without smoking, either, so don't use that excuse as a crutch for being nasty.

Don't make any more announcements about it, either. If you've got one lit in your hand right now, put the thing out and throw out all other cigarettes in your house. Don't buy any more, either, "just in case." That's just more pointless rationalization.

Good luck, and I support your efforts to stop a filthy, nasty, pointless habit.

i'm off them 3 years now but i was trying for a long time. In the end it's easy. No 1 you have to hate them and have to really want to give them up for the right reasons. No 2 tell yourself you're sick, like when you have the flu and there's nothing you can do except wait til you're better. You will get better, when i got a craving i used to take a deep breath in through my nose and remind myself i will get better and smile in the end i enjoyed the cravings . I never even get a craving now and i feel better than ever. i hope it works for you no matter which way you go good luck

I quit 28 years ago on May 28th.
I wanted to do something and smoking would prevent me from doing it.
I wanted it more than smoking. So I quit.
I cut down to 3 cigarettes a day for 3 weeks and then quit for good.
Find something you will benefit from, something you want more than that cigarette.
When the cravings got bad and I thought I would go back, I found that putting whole cloves in my mouth and letting them sit there helped.

Yes. Do what I did 20 years ago, and simply throw the packet away and never smoke another. No fads, no reducing 20, 15, 10 a day. Just stop. Good luck!

This worked for Davy Jones (yes, the brit in The Monkeys). His dad told him to do this, and it stopped him in his tracks

Go and buy a 20 pack of your favourite smokes, go home..... and eat them. Yes, eat them.

By your 4th you should be feeling quite sick, and by your 6th you should be sick. Keep the rest around your house.

Now that you have been violently sick because of these just the thought of a cigarette (spelling?) with make you feel sick again. You will still have the cravings, but you wont be able to bring yourself to smoke ever again.

Any possible health risks of eating a few fags will be offset by the benefits of not smoking ever again.
