You are very wise to stay out of the sun, especially since you have fair skin.

There are many self-tanners on the market, but I can't really say which one is best. Basically, they all have the same formula. I don't know the scientific name for it, but it darkens the skin in the same way, whether you get it at the drug store and pay around $7 or $8, or you go to a department store and shell out about $30. This year they have come out with gradual self-tanners that don't work quite as fast, but give a natural tan with continued use. I use one by Jergens. These gentle tanners are diluted with body lotions, so in addition to tanning you gradually, they also keep the skin moisturized. I find that most regular self tanners have a tendency to dry the skin.

Before using any self tanner, you should use an exfoliator to get rid of any rough spots on your skin. Otherwise, the tanner won't adhere properly, and you'll wind up with uneven blotches or streaks. You can use the exfoliators, or body scrubs right in the shower. After drying your skin, apply the tanner evenly, and be sure it dries before you get dressed, to avoid staining light clothing.

Since you're a first-time user, it might be best to go to one of those self-tanning salons. They use a type of spray that goes on evenly, and gets the parts that are hard to reach. They can also instruct you in the best way to preserve the artificial tan, keep your skin moisturized, and the proper use of make-up to enhance the color. Fake tans last about as long as real tans, so if you do use one, it should be applied at least twice a week after you have achieved the darkness you desire. For a fair skin, I wouldn't go too dark. Some of the self tanners come in two formulas; one for lighter skin, and one in a medium or darker tone.

Jergens Natural Glow is great, and really easy to apply. All you have to do is make sure you really blend it well, and do it nightly, or every other night and it will look very natural. Start off with the lightest shade and work up. I have never had a spray tan, but friends of mine have and they always look pretty nice and natural. I know one of my friends had difficulty because if you flinch at all then you end up with streaks. I'd try something at home first and see how that goes.

I have got the Johnsons Holiday Skin for overnight which is really good.

A friend of mine used to use foundation and body lotion and that always looked ok.

Its all about finding the right one that suits your skin tone really, trial and error to be honest.

As for the spray tan you get done in the shops, 2 of my friends who got married last year both had that done and it did look ok but it can look a bit orange if your not careful.

Hope you find one that suits you.

try palmer-cutler fake tan mousse in light to medium (you can buy it in boots). It is for blondes & redheads and is paler than all others and does not stink too much. I wear it to work and nobody seems to notice. Be careful putting it on as it is clear. I have not had any problems with streaks, but I have used fake tan for years. Also try fake-bake, but you have to put this on at night as it has a dark dye. Make sure you get behind your legs and all your arms covered.

Exfoliate with exfoliating gloves from the body shop. Don't buy exfoliators as they just end up washed down the drain. Use any cheap moisturiser (BUT NOT BEFORE PUTTING TAN ON) and use loads!!

Hope it works out OK!

you should try the "gradual tanning lotions"

like they work like regular lotions and you just apply everyday, in about a day or two you should see a difference.
(Daily Radiance, moisturizer)

other than that, those instant lotions are just too tricky to deal with, and mistakes are noticeable.

*dont put too much around your knees, elbows, ankles...well you know.

get a spray tan. those last for a couple months, jsut go back for touch ups

I have a (female) friend who swears by St. Tropez.
There's nothing wrong with being pale by the way.
