I have heard that ac repairmen would prefer to swap out a full ac unit, instead of swapping out just the compresssor or the fan motor. It that really neccessary or is it a scam? I have a gas handler in the garage (works fine), but my ac unit (42,000 btu; 3.5 tons) has a burnt compresor and burnt fan motor. Why Can't I just get the compressor and motor replaced and save all types of money???

i have been a hvacr service tech for 20 yrs , if both the compressor and the motor is bad you probably should replace the complete condensing unit, but you probably have a 10 seer unit and the gov. mandated only 13 seer and higher can be mfg,ed after first of 06 so most suppliers stock of 10 seer is depleted by now and you're options are 13 seer. they are higher priced and require you to also replace the evaperator in the air handler. which drives the price up even further,, the best thing you can do is get a second opinion about the problem, it is highly unusual for both a compressor and a motor to go bad at the same time so i am very suspicious of the tech that diagnosed the problem,, there are many unqualified techs in this field with little experience with strong motivation to sell due to comissions , i can't tell you how many times i have been called out to give a 2nd opinion and found the problem easilly solved with few $$. also if these parts are indeed bad ,it could have been caused by lightning and your insurance would cover...short answer,, get a 2nd opinion by an experienced tech working for a reputable co.,,,,,,, call around ps; if i changed the compressor and the motor ,price would be approx, $1000.

Add the cost of replacing the compressor and fan unit (very seldom do they both burn out at the same time so get a second opinion) and then think about the increased efficiency and new condenser unit might get you and make your decision. It is common for repairmen to recommend new units if they have kids getting ready to go to college. Do as you did with your kids. Trust but verify (with a second opinion).

If it's an older unit the parts may be close to being outdated. You might be better off with a new energy efficient unit which will cost less to run.
