The Romulan Neutral Zone is a buffer zone between Federation and Romulan space. It is located northeast of the sol system (earth). It also seperates the Alpha and Beta Quadrants

In the fictional Star Trek universe, a neutral zone is a sort of "buffer zone" between the territories of two different powers. If either party enters a neutral zone it is an aggressive move and is usually considered an act of war. The Federation has had two neutral zones: one with the Klingon Empire and one with the Romulan Star Empire. Used on its own, "the Neutral Zone" generally refers to the Romulan Neutral Zone. A Neutral Zone in all but name also exists between the Federation and the Cardassians.

The Romulan Neutral Zone is between Federation Space and Romulan Space on the Star Trek Series. It does not actually exist.

Woah, girl, hold your starships a second. We humans will not encounter the Vulcans from planet Vulcan until the very late 21st century and we will not be at war with the Romulans until the early 23rd Century. Then after that war we will declare a tenuous peace that includes a neutral zone or demilitarized zone if you will. You will have to wait until the mid to late 23rd century before anyone will even know what you are talking about!!
