It can get overheated, however not all the time it does damage. If your CPU was damage, it wouldn't even work.

Usually, if the CPU is overheating the system will simply turn off, but only if the CPU has that protection built in. If it is a very old computer, then thats not likely, but it would have to be VERY old.

Heat is the Numero uno enemy of all the electronic devices...even though CPU's have a robust and strong core once they overheat...they get damage...WHY...because you have millions and millions of tiny transistors embedded in the CPU and once you get a couple thousand fried...your PC performance decreases and eventually KAPUT...so my fiend.....Time to get a new PC....
Good Luck

MOst likely not your processor overheating, but just the inevitable result of years of use.
Probably highly fragmented, too many programs, temporary files, and general "stuff".
I would first off try to defragment your hard drive(s).
After that I would go about cleaning out temporary files.

Processors dont overhear and burn out unless a fan went out or something. To be honest, this is fairly rare.
Try those 2 things tho. Good luck.
