It's still there. Canada and the US are negotiating the terms of a pipeline to bring it from Alaska to the US. The problem is, it passes through some environmentally sensitive areas, so there have to be special safeguards in place and advanced pipeline techniques to prevent oil spills that could permanently wipe out a number of endangered species. Also, in the tundra country, growth is super slow, given the climatic conditions, so spills and excessive tracking would beat down the grasses and mosses that keep the reindeer and other herds alive.

The Liberals have continually blocked Bush's attempts to legalize the Alaska drilling.
Thus you can blaim the Liberals for the price of oil/gas. Were we to drill there that would increase the supply and thus the demand would drop as would the prices.

Ever hear of the Alaskan Pipeline? We're burning that oil as we speak. You didn't think ALL of our oil came from the middle east, did you?
BTW, the caribou that were supposed to have had problems with the 'strange thing' snaking down to the lower 48 actually prefer to have their young under the pipeline. It's warmer there, better for their calves.
