they are water turtles, either red-eared or sliders or cooters
depending on what part of the country you're in
keep their water clean and feed them bugs and worms

Yellow and green stripes in a pattern under the shell sounds like red-eared sliders to me. Check the sides of the head and see if there's a tiny patch of red.

these turtles are very common and have a lot of different names and subspecies... but they are basically all the same kind of turtle, slider, green slider, red eared slider, pan turtle, cooter, etc...
