Hi all .

My daughter is 13 months old now and she sleeps in the cot with a soft teddy bear. Often when my Wife and I check in on her she is asleep with her head resting on the teddy bear acting as a pillow. My question is at what age should we give her a pillow to use, would it be safe at this age now?
I only ask as you all know how uncomfortable it is to sleep without one and I am wondering if it would be benificial to give her a pillow now.

I am a first time parent and would be grateful for any help

At this age she can roll and push herself up so it's not likely that she would just lay there and let herself suffocate. Start off with a flatter pillow rather than a big puffy one. They offer plenty of support for her neck and head so she'll be more comfortable. It seems that it's uncomfortable for her to lie flat if she keeps using her teddy bear. Essentially she already has one in the bear so just make it official!!

My daughter didnt have one until 18 months. My son is 12 weeks and sleeps on a pillow. If not he will not sleep. I think it all depends on the child. Your daughter is at the age where sid's is not an issue because she is up and around and able to turn over in her bed. My daughters doctor said that when they are able to roll by themselves the risk of sids goes away.

My lil girl didn't get a pillow until she was at least 4.

Has long as UR lil girl is happy let her have a small pillow, half-size.
50% 50% chance of getting it right.

& only because my daughter was 4 over 20 years ago & I'm not sure what the latest advice is concerning pillows.

She will be fine with a small fairly flat pillow. We used a travel pillow. I'd be more concerned she would use her bear as a step to climb out of her cot.

I gave my little one a soft pillow at 11 months. Seemed to sleep better... until he found that the pillows on the bed were even better!

It is fine to give her a pillow now, she is old enough and most importantly strong enough that should she turn over in her sleep, she will instinctively turn her head sideways for air. She wont suffocate. If she has a strong neck which she does, she can get herself (her nose) from the pillow.

I would say you you could try a pillow, but get a very flat one {not too squidgy}. I think it is possible to get special ones....might be worth trying the internet or a store that sells baby bedding. Having said this, if she is happy without, then continue until she is slightly older. Hope this helps.

My daughter has had a pillow since she was about 10 months old. Its safe. At that age, she won't let herself suffocate. If she can't breathe, she'll move. I'd give her one. Maybe just get a little one if you are concerned.

most baby bedding gives a guideline that duvets and pillows can be given to a baby from 12 months old. check out mothercare.com if you're in the uk.
